Two crime writers take on St. Louis

So what do two true crime/mystery authors talk about when we get together at a crime convention? Well, this may shock you but when Diane Fanning and I roomed together this past week in St. Louis, we weren't discussing autopsies, DNA, or forensic psychology (at least not all the time). Instead, we talked about writing, books, and how lucky we are to be living our dreams.

Why St. Louis? Because the city with the arch was this year's setting for Bouchercon, America's premier annual crime fiction/mystery convention, a four-day event that attracts authors and readers from far and wide. Some literally travel from across the world to attend. One morning over breakfast at the Renaissance Grand, the hotel where the convention was held, I hobnobbed with Scottish powerhouse Val McDermid while we perused the pastries. In the hallway the following afternoon, I had a few important moments (undoubtedly more memorable for me than it was for him) with perennial bestseller Harlan Coben.

I wish you all could have come. The days were hectic but so much fun. On Thursday, the first full day of the convention, I took the stage at ten a.m., along with Connie Dial, a former LAPD captain who'd been one of those on the scene at the Nicole Simpson/Ron Goldman murders, Matt Hilton, a former London bobbie turned author, and Morley Swingle, a Missouri prosecutor/author. The topic: No way to treat a body.

Once I'd finished, I was free to peruse the panel schedule with the other fans, to listen to the riotous McDermid and so many others, including Reed Farrel Coleman, John Lutz, Jason Pinter, Laura Lippman, J.T. Ellison, Meg Gardiner, Joe Finder, Ridley Pearson, Jeff Abbott, Coben, Jan Burke, way too many authors to name here.

In the evenings, there were cocktail parties hosted by publishers, so much fun. There I met great folks who run bookstores. Some like Robin and Jamie Agnew who own Aunt Agatha's in Ann Arbor, MI, I'd interacted with before over the Net. Others like McKenna Jordan from Houston's Murder by the Book I've known for years.

Over the four days, I struck up conversations with wonderful folks who love books so much they devote their time to reviewing, including some who run their own blogs or websites, like Jen Forbus (Jen's Book Thoughts) and Sara Reyes (Fresh Fiction). And most important of all, I met great people who enjoy losing themselves in a good book, dedicated readers. Thank you to all of you who read books and recommend your favorites. We sincerely wouldn't be able to do it without you.

In between, I chatted with authors young and old, talking about the craft and the future, in this tumultuous yet exciting time when the publishing world is shifting under the weight of eBooks and no one is quite certain what it will look like when the literary ground settles.

For me, Bouchercon 2011 will always be a great memory. I had a superb time, and I hope to attend again in the years to come. Where else can one bump into Sara Paretsky in a hallway and arrive late at an event with Laurie R. King? At the airport I spotted Lisa Unger, whose psychological thrillers I enjoy, waiting at the next gate for her plane home.

Please forgive me. I know I've left out many people. I can say only that it would take a book to mention everyone, but I enjoyed meeting you one and all. And I'd particularly like to thank the volunteers who pulled Bouchercon together and ran it so smoothly, I didn't notice a wrinkle: Jon and Ruth Jordan of Crimespree magazine, that intrepid photographer Paul Jordan, Jeremy Lynch who guided me into pulling my basket together for the silent auction, and Judy Bobalik who with Ruth fashioned a menu of outstanding panels.

My only regret: that it took so long for me to attend a Bouchercon. Now that I have, I think they may become addictive.
