Dear Readers:
Times change and bring new opportunities. Sometimes, when we're lucky, they offer new venues for creativity.
You see, I didn't always write books. For more than two decades, I was a magazine writer, traveling the U.S. on deadlines. At times, my editors assigned me to investigate sensational murder cases. It's how my career as a crime writer began, and some of those cases from my early years, well, they're still among my favorites.
Sadly, the world of magazines is such that a writer's work quickly ends up discarded in recycle bins. That's a heart breaker for writers like me, those who pour their hearts and souls into their work. So, even after I began writing true crime and mystery books, I kept a file in my desk, a drawer filled with my best magazine work. I always hoped that someday I'd find a way to resurrect it, to again share some of the most amazing stories of my career.
And then there were eBooks. The result? My four new true crime shorts now available on Kindle and Nook. Which cases did I choose?
* Texas Love Triangle Murder: the first murder case I ever covered. Set in Texas's Big Thicket in the confines of a small town middle school, a love triangle between the principal, a coach, and the school secretary, made international headlines. This is a story of love, hatred, race and murder.
*Blues & Bad Blood: in the Seventies, Texas folksinger John Vandiver augmented his earnings by selling pot out of the back of his VW bus. But in the cocaine-fueled Eighties, the drug world changed, and Vandiver's protegee turned on him, murdering Vandiver and his live-in lover, Debbie Davis. B&BB mixes music, drugs, and murder.
* The Drag Queen Murder: A never-before-published piece exploring the fate of a beautiful Cajun girl from Louisiana who began a love affair with Texas's most outlandish drag queen. Cliff Youens/Brandi West was willing to give up his flamboyant career for Patrice LeBlanc, but in the end, when she tried to leave him, he exacted a lethal toll. Yet some question if it was really Brandi wielding the knife.
* True Crime Files: My Most Memorable Cases: A short anthology compiled of three cases centered around women. Case one: Denise Sam-Cali was raped and left for dead by a brutal serial killer, but she survived and went on to help police catch him. Yet in the end, did the killer win? Case two: In the small town of Poth, TX., sixteen-year-old Maggie Ward lifted a gun and shot her mother through the back of her head. Why? A disturbing case that's every parent's nightmare. Case three: A child dies, and a mother and grandmother suspect murder. Yet the police refuse to investigate the little girl's father. Will he get away with murder?
All the pieces have been expanded and updated. All include photos. At prices that range from .99 to $2.99, they're inexpensive but fun. If you don't have an eReader, they can be downloaded to a Mac, PC, even your smart phone. True Crime Book Reviews says of Texas Love Triangle Murder: "THE beach read for true crime fans."
These are cases I'll never forget. My hope is that you'll find them just as fascinating. To start, here's the Amazon link to True Crime Files: http://www.amazon.com/True-Crime-Files-Memorable-ebook/dp/B005I6B2JE/ref=sr_1_21?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1314034450&sr=1-21
